With the rain forecast for the afternoon on Monday I spent the morning in my newly turfed set.
This set I built to try and get birds feeding on worms, robins thrushes etc and whilst making it I have several visits from the woodpeckers and I noticed one newly fledged youngster with them.
I set up some natural looking perches, put out some food and waited, not long in my case as for within minutes 3 turned up at once and tucked in.
Last year the parents fetched one chick at a time until I had four around the feeders all day, mum and dad are still busy cramming mouth fills of food to take back to their nest nearby, hopefully more to follow soon.
I had around 6 -8 birds and I think this is two family groups so hoping for more chicks to share with you all on your next visit.
If you have never spent time watching a group of woodpeckers you are surely missing a treat, they all squabble and jostle for position on the food giving great photo opportunities.
The host parent feed and tolerate their young but others peck and even fight with the newly fledged birds here is a photo of the first fledgeling being attacked.
