The weather looked dry last night until 8 (Friday 2.2.21) so after working on the wood I stayed behind to see how the owls were doing.
I only need a window of a couple of hours with them as they seem to appear just after dark and then once their food has gone, they drift away into the night.
Last night seemed slightly different, it’s now getting darker earlier in the evenings and I had to wait 1/2 hour after dark for one to appear on one of the posts I’ve put out for them to land on, so it was around 5.40 when one appeared.
I’m feeding them dead chicks twice a week to supplement their natural food, only one each which should help them out a bit.
There’s should be plenty of food in the wood for them as I make loads of log piles when I’m coppicing which in turn gives the wood mice, voles, and shrews somewhere safe to live and breed.
Anyhow, I had one visit of a couple of minutes and then a couple of snatch and grab raids and I packed up at 7.20 pm.
Setup:
2-speed lights set at 4.5 meters away in a ‘v’ shape is eliminate shadows, set at 1/8 power, nothing fancy, and one Led light set at 1% (lowest setting) to gain focus.
Oh, and I had a visit from a badger at 7 pm, looking well-fed and healthy.
Here is what I got from the short session.
