Last night I stayed behind after repairing one of the hide roofs which took a battering in the storm to try and see if I could get lucky and get my first photos of the resident Tawny owls.
I have been putting out dead baby chicks when I leave each visit, the ones they feed to snakes, and see what happens on my trail camera the next visit.
Every evening for the last few weeks I have at least one and occasionally two on the feeding post together looking for an easy meal just after dark.
I did put up a new owl box last year but not sure if they are using it and generally keep away from this area so as not to disturb them if they are indeed in the box.
Photography wise I used my Nikon Z6 because it’s quieter than my D5 with a 500 f4 lens set wide open at f4.
I set up two flashguns at 1/16 power on either side of the posts along with a led light so I could gain focus and
to be honest, it worked a treat maybe needs some refining but first go, really pleased.
I thought the LED light might put them off and the flash scares them away but they seemed okay with single shot and not constantly firing.
The long-term goal to light the posts with both my LED’s and not use the flash but it will take a bit of time to watch their reactions, so work in progress.
Here are some from last night one photo showing it eating a chick.
