Today with the pond taken care of , for now anyway, I set my attention to making more nest boxes.
Slightly new design and managed to make 5 this morning.
Here’s a run through on how I make them.
First select Larch log approx 18 inch with slope already cut, turn upside down and attach 2 foot length of 4 x 1 then turn over and attach the 4 x 1 to large log I use as a bench.
This stops it from moving as I cut it.
4 x 1 screw temporary to bottom to stop movement whilst cutting
Screwed to large log to stop movement whilst cutting.
Then cut off the sides.
Now cut down each side and then cut a plunge cut to free the middle.
Plunge cut to free middle.
Remove middle , waste section
Remove middle , waste section then nail sides back on at bottom.
Top view with sides nailed back on.
28ml Auger drill bit.
I have tried using my battery drill but it flattens them in no time so I use an old fashion bit & brace drill which works great.
Then I fixed the roof section together with screws instead of nailing so I could go back at a later date and clean them out if needed.
Here is five I made in a couple of hours this morning, later in the week I will fix these and more to trees around the wood using metal banding used to fix window frames to block work.
