Deer friend comes to visit 1.2.23
On the way to the wood last week, I passed a dead Roe deer, most likely hit by a car.
I span around and picked it up, usually, I would just drive past but it seemed such a waste of a life to be mangled by traffic, endangering others trying to get a meal.
This was on Friday and was left well alone, staked to a large log just in case the badgers tried to have it away.
So on Monday when I arrived I checked the carcass with little changing apart from something nibbling at the head.
next, I checked the trail camera and saw several visits from the Friday after had left to just after I arrived on Monday, showing there was interest but they couldn’t get to the meat, I had a plan.
I got my machete and chopped a hole in the side, gruesome but had to be done.
By 1 pm I was set up in the hide not knowing if one would investigate, at 3 pm one did and stayed around an hour picking at the hole I had created.
Buzzards are notoriously wary, and any small amount of movement of the lens would see it disappear so to avoid any disturbance I had my lens and camera on a gimbal and once focused on the deer, locked down so it couldn’t move, just moving the focus point if needed.
I managed some nice shots in the 40 mins it was there and at one point a Raven circled and the buzzard started to mantel the deer, probably needs bigger wings but its instinct to hide its meal was there.
Here is a few from the session and the deer remains in place for further shoots.
