Thursday during the day I could hear young Buzzards calling, probably begging for food from the parents.
So Friday after doing some maintenance I set up with a squirrel I had defrosted ( one of many I find in the road dead)
and nailed it to a post.
I use extra camo netting for concealment in the hide as they can be very wary and fly off at the slightest movement.
Gear wise I am using my Nikon Z9 with the 400mm z lens, the bait was 12 meters away, and using an aperture of 7,1 gave me 37 cm depth of field which should be enough if I kept the focus accurate.
By 1,30 pm I was set up and prefocused on the squirrel with my gimbal locked down so it wouldn’t be knocked easily as spook the birds.
I had several flybys but it was not until 4 o’clock that one landed nearby and after checking out the area for 15 mins landed on the squirrel.
Using my camera in silent shutter I began firing off a few shots and watching its behaviour, it seemed to settle and began prodding the squirrel to find a weak spot to open it up.
Over the next two hours, two birds came and went, noisily calling each other and by 6,15 I had packed up and left them to it.
Here are some of the shots I took in very harsh light and looking forward to another go soon.
